The US monetary authority reduced borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second reduction in the current year amid economic turbulence originating from the government closure and tariff policies.
Move Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve
The decision to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates even with persistent inflation.
Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Changes
In a announcement, the Federal Reserve stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the release reads. “Inflation has moved up and remains moderately high.”
Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job
The ongoing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.
Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions
The Fed typically studies labor statistics to assess employment trends, such as the count of employment gains added to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in August.
The figure of positions created to the market in August was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment rose to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.
Alternative Reports Show Continued Slowdown
Though the bureau was scheduled to release September’s job market report in early October, it halted its release once the shutdown started. Private payroll firm ADP reported recently that the private sector cut thirty-two thousand positions in September, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.
“Supply as well as demand for workers has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head Jerome Powell said earlier this month, which he had earlier attributed comes from immigration and tariff policies.
Price Data Shows Gradual Increase
Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still released its price statistics for last month that indicated that costs are going up, albeit slowly. Costs rose 3% over the past twelve months, the peak since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
