This Supernatural Story
The acclaimed director tests his directorial skills with this nifty paranormal narrative shot entirely from the perspective of the spirit. As a family including mother Rebekah and troubled teenage daughter Chloe settles into their recent residence, the camera – representing the ghost – tracks their movements. The teen shows signs of aware of the ghostly being, and it seems protective of her. However, the motive remains? This is an entertaining concept that doesn't outstay its welcome, including a revelation you might not see coming. Saturday 11 October, multiple showings, Sky Cinema Premiere

The Black Phone
The director's contained scarefest stands strong even without a follow-up. Set in 1970s Colorado, a series of disappearances has left the children anxious. Once Finney is taken by “the Grabber” and held captive in a dungeon, he fears a terrible outcome. However, the non-functional line mounted nearby keeps ringing, with spooky callers giving advice, while the prophetic visions of his sister Gwen may be his salvation. An effective horror. Saturday 11 October, 10.50pm, the Film4 channel
This Dramatic Portrait
In the battle between spirituality and money, the winner is obvious for materialism in Michael Showalter's brilliantly over-the-top biopic of the disgraced televangelist plus her lawbreaking partner. Garfield portrays the greedy Jim, who states initially, claiming divine approval for wealth. Both individuals begin monetising the people's religious faith. It's a riot of tacky decor, overdone appearance and insincerity, though Jessica Chastain manages to present the real-life figure in a likable light. October 14th, early morning, the Film4 channel
