Nepal's Political Landscape Sees Major Partnership Formed By Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a significant move ahead of next year's national polls, a pair of high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal youth-led demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the removal of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Address Youth Demands

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the issues highlighted by the new generation. This promise comes after the violent anti-corruption unrest that occurred in September, which led to considerable loss of life.

"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.

The September revolt was triggered by public frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a catalyst for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and longstanding accusations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Terms of the Fresh Electoral Agreement

According to the official agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's established political class. He has previously held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in forming the interim government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.

Broader Political Consultations Taking Place

In a related event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with a number of leading political figures. These talks included ex- prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the uprising.

Following these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a shared responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and open environment for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
